Overcoming dichotomous thinking for understanding Lao tse’s Tao Re Ching

Abstract

|
We can understand Lao tse``s Tao Re Ching when we overcome a dichotomy. Dichotomy come to pass when we give name to things and facts in order to know them. It is said that we can know "A" when we can divide some things or facts between "A" and "non A" by giving "A" to one of them. So the dichotomy can be the basis of cognition. And this is the strength of dichotomy. But it should not be overlooked that this object of cognition is only in itself truly phenomenon, not a real reality. The dichotomy can be acted as a shortcoming in recognition when we try to our recognition stretch to the real reality with the dichotomous thinking by overlooking this point. Overcoming theories of dichotomous thinking are generally known as "Error of Black and White", "Dialectic", "Flow Philosophy" in western thought, and "Logic of Zhou Changes", "Theory of K?ng", "Theory of the Mystery Same", "Theory of the Already Interdepend Premise" in eastern thought. "Theory of the Mystery Same" and "Theory of the Already Interdepend Premise" can be analogized out of Tao Te Ching. Especially "Theory of the Mystery Same" can be analogized in Chapter 1 of Tao Te Ching, and "Theory of the Already Interdepend Premise" can be analogized in Chapter 2 of Tao Te Ching. "Theory of Mystery Same" means that the reality which can be same and unidentical in the darkness before separating a phenomenon with dichotomy is actually identical with the phenomenon which is denominated with dichotomy. "Theory of the Already Interdepend Premise" is a theory that the dichotomous thinking can be seed of battles because the phenomena, being deeply connected ontologically and epistemologically, are divided into superiority and inferiority in two terms. Given name with dichotomy, the phenomena have term which has name and contrasted term which doesn``t name. In order to block the source of their battles, Lao Tse emphasized ``managing affair without action`` which artificial divisions should not be done, and preached ``the doctrine without words`` which dividing teachings should not be done.
